How Auckland trades rate on Google: ratings and review counts across 10 trades

Key findings
- The median Google rating across 553 rated Auckland trade listings is 5.0. Only 19 (3%) are rated below 4.0, so a rating alone separates very little.
- 311 listings (56%) show a perfect 5.0, and 119 of those are based on fewer than 10 reviews.
- 200 of 598 listings (33%) have fewer than 10 reviews, the minimum this guide uses before rating a business.
- Review counts vary far more than ratings: the median listing has 20 reviews, and the median ranges from 10 to 43 depending on the trade.

What this means when choosing a business
Because almost every listing sits between 4.5 and 5.0, the number of reviews behind a rating tells a reader more than the rating itself. A 5.0 from six reviews and a 4.8 from three hundred are not the same evidence. This guide's ranking adjusts every rating toward the trade average in proportion to how few reviews it rests on, and gives separate points for review volume.
Reviews are only one signal. The lists also score verifiable trading history, published prices, trade-body membership where a directory exists, and the areas a business says it serves. See the methodology.
Method and limits
Data: 66 Google Maps searches ("<trade> <area>" for 10 trades and 6 Auckland areas, Auckland location, English), read through a search data provider on 6 October and 10 October 2026, returning 598 unique listings. Ratings and review counts are as Google displayed them that day. No review text was collected.
Limits: Maps results are not a census of every business; they are what Google returned for those searches. Ratings can be influenced by how actively a business asks for reviews. Listings were not checked by hand for this study, so some are businesses whose main trade is something else.
